Regulated Qualification in Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases on Refrigerant Systems (F-Gas Category I-IV)
This Level 3 award in F- Gas is a regulated qualification designed for leaners working in the refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps industries. This qualification covers all F Gas activities (Category 1) and is essential for compliance with Regulation (EU) 2015/2067.
Description
This course is suitable for learners working within the Refrigeration and or related service sectors wishing to increase skill and expertise.
- The learner will know the fundamental principles of thermodynamics.
- The learner will know the environmental impact of refrigerants and corresponding environmental regulations.
- The learner will be able to carry out checks before putting in operation, after a long period of non-use, after maintenance or repair intervention, or during operation.
- The learner will be able to check for leakage.
- The learner will be able to handle the system and refrigerant during installation, maintenance, servicing or recovery in an environmentally friendly manner in accordance with the regulations.
- The learner will be able to put into operation and maintain reciprocating, screw and scroll compressors, single and two-stage.
- The learner will be able to install, put into operation and maintain air cooled and water cooled condensers.
- The learner will be able to install, put into operation and maintain air cooled and water cooled evaporators.
- The learner will be able to install, put into operation and the servicing of Thermostatic Expansion Valves (TEV) and other components.
- The learner will be able to build a leak-tight piping system in a refrigeration installation.
- The learner will know the information on relevant technologies.
Learners will receive the appropriate certificate relevant to the undertaken qualification.
Prerequisites
Learners wishing to undertake Category (I) or (ll) qualifications must hold a recognised qualification in Refrigeration, Heating & Ventilation or other related industry sector or have a minimum of 2 years auditable experience working within the Refrigeration or Heating & Ventilation sector.
All learners must have a good practical working knowledge of different soldering and brazing methods to undertake this type of work.
Learners registered on and undertaking an apprenticeship or qualification which has a requirement for Category I or II F-Gas classification are exempt from the published pre-requisites above.
Category III & IV are Level 2 qualifications and have no pre-requisites, they may be undertaken by any learner after initial assessment.
Exam Information
Theory and practical based with Assessment.
Dress Code
Candidates must bring the following items with them to the course:
- Safety Boots/Suitable Footwear
- High Visibility Vest/Jacket
- Overalls/Suitable Workwear
Materials Required
Learners are required to bring paper and a pen to make notes during their training.
All learners must bring with them one of the following forms of ID:
- A valid passport – no more than 6 months out of date
- A valid UK photo driving license - no more than 6 months out of date
- A photographic employee ID card
- A photographic ID card from an awarding body (e.g. IPAF, RTITB, NPORS)
If you do not have any of the above, please contact us for further information.
Course Materials and Manuals
To get the most from the course, learners are strongly encouraged to purchase their own copy of the F-Gas Reference Manual (2nd Edition) before attending. Having a personal copy will allow you to highlight key information, write notes alongside the content, complete revision activities, and refer back to the material during assessment and after the course.
A reference manual will be available for learners to use in the classroom throughout the training course. However, all copies must remain at the training centre.
Recommended materials
- F-Gas Reference Manual (2nd Edition)
Covers refrigerant properties—including HFCs, HFOs, hydrocarbons, ammonia and CO₂—along with F-gas legislation and regulations, refrigeration theory, system components, pressure-enthalpy charts, and relevant European standards. - F-Gas 517/2014 Workbook
A useful companion to the reference manual for practical exercises, knowledge checks and revision.
Please note that purchasing your own materials is not compulsory, but it is highly advantageous if you would like to make detailed notes during the course and retain a valuable revision resource for future use.
