New Roads and Street Works Act - Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus (NRSWA Unit LA)
This course is for those employed in carrying out work on the highway who are required to locate underground apparatus.
Description
This course aims to provide a sound understanding of the techniques used to locate and avoid underground apparatus on the Highway. It complies with the mandatory requirements of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991.
To provide knowledge and understanding in the following areas:
- Interpret and understand plans showing location of underground apparatus.
- Identify and understand how to identify types of utilities apparatus and highways services encountered during excavation.
- Identify and understand the risks and implications of damage to underground utilities apparatus and highway services.
- Use pipe and cable location equipment.
- Safe digging techniques (HSG47).
Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will receive multiple CABWI Certificates and a Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR) Card.

Candidates must be:
- Physically fit.

- Safety Boots/Suitable Footwear
- High Visibility Vest/Jacket
- Safety Glasses
- Hard Hat
- Gloves
- Overalls/Suitable Workwear
Materials Required
Candidates must be:
Physically fit
Candidates are required to bring paper and a pen to make notes during their training.
All candidates must bring with them one of the following forms of ID:
- A valid passport – no more than 6 months out of date
- A valid UK photo driving license - no more than 6 months out of date
- A photographic employee ID card
- A photographic ID card from an awarding body (e.g. IPAF, RTITB, NPORS)
